There have been plenty of bad acquisitions throughout gaming history, all struggling for a multitude of reasons. We’ve seen studios that fell off right after being purchased, potential great partnerships that just didn’t work out as expected, or poorly led new management dragging down once great teams. But I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a purchase that has been more of a net negative for all parties involved, than PlayStation’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022. It has been a total trainwreck, a messy situation emblematic of everything wrong with both individual companies. So as Bungie’s future now hangs in the balance, let’s take a look back at how in the world we got here.
