Lake Baikal in Russia. It is over a mile deep (1642 meters) and its bottom is approximately 3,893 feet (1,187 meters) below sea level. It is also the world’s largest freshwater lake in terms of volume, containing more freshwater than all five of North America’s Great Lakes combined. Lake Baikal is a rift lake, meaning it formed where two continental plates pulled apart. It is also the world’s oldest lake, at 25–30 million years. Lake Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of them endemic to the region . UNESCO declared Baikal a World Heritage Site in 1996.
