Austrian actor Lucas Englander and his mother Juno discuss Lucas’s grandfather (Juno’s father), who fled Europe in the 1940sin response to anti-Semitic violence. He arrived in New York as a refugee and promptly joined an organisation working to help other Austrian Jews escape. From housing new refugees to leveraging contacts in Europe, Lucas’s grandfather did all he could to help others like himself find safety and stability.
When forced to flee Europe, Lucas’s grandfather could only carry so much, but he brought so many intangible gifts to his new community in the United States: hopes and dreams, experiences and talents, traditions and family stories, resilience and determination.
