When Justice League premiered in 2001, it looked like a straightforward action cartoon - laser beams, flying heroes, monsters from space. But beneath the spectacle was something far more revealing: a vision of the world shaped by pre-9/11 optimism, where cooperation, dialogue, and shared responsibility were strengths.
In this video, I take a close look at Secret Origins, the three-part opening story that introduced the League, and how it reflects a moment in history when global crises were still imagined as solvable through trust rather than suspicion.
From nuclear disarmament and international cooperation, to the symbolic role of The Imperium and their opposition to light, this story presents a version of heroism rooted in collaboration, not control.
We’ll explore why the team is called The Justice League, not The Justice League of America, how its deliberately diverse roster reinforces its global outlook, and why this hopeful vision of internationalism became harder to sustain in superhero storytelling after the War on Terror reshaped the cultural imagination.
