While modern audiences point to Batman: Caped Crusader for a darker look at the Dark Knight, 2013’s Beware the Batman delivered DC's most underrated, long-form psychological character study.
In this video essay I highlight the definitive, season-long arc of a younger, physically vulnerable Bruce Wayne. From his brutal education under an ex-MI6 Alfred and his toxic pushback against Katana, to his near-fatal downward spiral into madness, this series completely deconstructs the lone-wolf archetype.
I also analyse the brilliant Sons of Alfred dynamic with Deathstroke, and how a makeshift family, The Outsiders, ultimately saves Batman from crossing a line he can never walk back from.
