The early days of Disney didn't have many women on staff that were writers or animators. A majority of women at the studio were part of the ink and paint department. Milicent Patrick was an exception because she was exceptional at creating characters. She'd work at Disney with her most well known contribution to the animation house being the demon Chernabog and would go on to create the Creature from the Black Lagoon when she left Disney.
