Films used in this episode:
Watchmen, 2009, dir. Zack Snyder
I saw Watchmen for the first time as a teenager with my dad, and sitting through the sex scene that occurs between Nite Owl and Silk Spectre about three quarters of the way through the film will always be one of the most uncomfortable moments of my life.
The scene is downright embarrassing from the indulgent shots, to the redundant visual innuendos, to the bizarre song choice.
I've seen these reasons and more serve as criticism of the scene and the film as a whole, but as I've grown older I've actually come to appreciate all those elements and how the love scene fits with the story being told.
The scene is so uncomfortable because it's reflective of Dan’s character arc. You're watching the sexual liberation of a sad, overweight man in the midst of his mid life crisis. The scene is awkward to watch because Dan is an awkward character.
Combined with the chorusing HALLELUJAH, we as an audience are really put inside Dan’s head and we're experiencing what he's experiencing. At least internally?
CULT POPCORN! 60 second video essays which focus on film, television and any other type of media we consume and devour handfuls at a time.
