Video production doesn’t have to be complicated. You can, and should know the videographer’s process and ensure that your video will ultimately advance your mission.
Every video goes through three distinct stages, called preproduction, production, and post production. These are defined by when the camera actually rolls – pre is before, production is the shoot itself, and post is after the shoot.
Preproduction is, hands-down, the most important of the three. This is where the goals and plans are created. Changes at this point are expected and are easy, something that’s not true later in the process. You should emerge from this stage with a clear picture of what your final video will look like.
Production is the shoot itself. This is the shortest stage and usually only lasts a day or two, but it is also the most expensive because the most people are required for it. Changes are possible, but more expensive and more risky.
Post production is when the editing happens. The footage you just captured is crafted into something refined and beautiful. There can be small revisions to the edits, switching out shots and things like that, but big changes are difficult, if not impossible, at this stage.
So pour the most time and attention into preproduction. Then the other two stages will be a breeze and your video will ultimately advance your mission.
