The origins of speedrunning are deeply tied to the midwest of the United States, its culture, aesthetics and life in general. Today, I wanted to share some legendary events and moments in speedrun history, to examine exactly why they are tied to the American midwest. This is my grand theory, in which we connect Midwestern culture, and similar cultures around the world, like those in Canada, and Nordic Europe; at least in terms of isolation, weather and general attitudes. Notably, the early history of speedrunning never really took place in Global Metropolitan Cities, like New York City, Paris or Hong Kong. Join me, as we ponder the untold midwestern origins of speedrunning, and its lasting influence on the activity.
