This episode was clearly talking about religion, but I'm wondering about the message behind it. Ellington is lost, searching for a sanctuary and he finds a religious group : that's already a first meaning, with someone who doesn't believe and searches for help, which can find it in the religion. Then, the character sees a man in jail who told him he was put here by a crazy man, Brother Jerome, just because he was kissing the girl Jerome wanted. But according to Jerome, that man is the Devil himself.
So the majority of the episode is in fact about Ellington being convinced at first by Brother Jerome about the fact that they really captured Satan, and it's thanks to that, that there has been no war since then. And then being convinced by that man that it's crazy thoughts. But the conclusion interrogates me : in fact, the guy was truly the Devil, only blocked by the Staff of Truth, and Ellington released him, felt bad, dedicated his life to search for him, found him but couldn't convince someone else who released him again etc. For me, the message behind is clear : people who don't believe in the Devil (so in God, all of the religious things), they're gonna be tempted and are forced to fail because they can only learn from their mistakes. It's truly an episode about religion, with a message also about trusting people with faith, almost blindly, because they're right.
