A turbocharger is a clever device that allows an engine to produce more power. A non-turbocharged engine uses regular uncompressed air and fuel. This works fine, but if you compress air, that is take air that normally fills, say, a pint glass and squish it down to a half-pint glass, then inject it into the cylinder, you’ll get a bigger bang because there’s more oxygen for the fuel to mix with. A bigger bang makes the cylinder move faster which makes the crankshaft turn faster which means a bigger smile on your face!
