In 1980s Britain the Sinclair name was synonymous with home computers. It was also synonymous with cheap design, terrible keyboards and long wait times to fulfil orders. Their second computer, the ZX80 had all of this and more. But with clever marketing and a very low price – less than £100 – it kickstarted a British computer revolution and helped to cement Britain today as a home of programming excellence.
And yet the leader of the company that made it, Clive Sinclair, wasn’t really interested in making computers. So, why did he produce it, and why was something so flimsy and underpowered so influential?
