Transcript: This is a story about a boy named Sam who goes on a camping trip with his father to Canada.
During the trip, Sam finds Trumpet Swans that are nesting nearby and is just in time for the birth of the cygnets, or baby swans.
One of the swans named Louis can’t speak.
Louis and his family fly south to Montana for the winter, where Sam lives with his family.
Louis leaves his family and searches for Sam to ask for help with his communication problem.
Louis stays with Sam and his family while attending Sam’s school to learn to read and write.
After a year of school, Louis returns to his family with a small chalkboard around his neck and the ability to read and write.
Louis tries to attract a mate, Serena, but is unsuccessful because he can't make a sound.
Louis’ father decides to get him a trumpet so that he can blow into it and get Serena's attention.
Louis' father steals a trumpet from a music store and gives it to Louis.
Louis practices with Sam’s help and is hired to be a counselor of a boys camp as a bugler.
After the camp, Louis flies to Boston to find another job, vowing to earn enough money to pay for the trumpet.
Louis is hired by a swan boat operator to play music in front of boat passengers.
Louis is a big success and stays at a fancy hotel.
One day, Louis receives an offer to play music at a nightclub in Philadelphia, which he accepts because the money is good.
After flying to Philadelphia, Louis stays at the Philadelphia Zoo while working each night at the nightclub.
Much to Louis’ surprise, a heavy storm brings Serena to the zoo and she is exhausted and near death.
Serena recovers and Louis plays music for her, resulting in them falling in love.
Louis wants to return back to Montana, but the zoo wants him to stay.
After Sam is flown in to negotiate Louis' release, they cut a deal where Louis and Serena can leave if they periodically give one of their cygnets to the zoo.
Louis returns to his family with Serena and after giving all of his money to his father, his father flies back to the music store to repay the storekeeper for the stolen trumpet.
In the act, however, Louis' father is shot, but recovers.
In the end, Louis and Serena have a family and travel around the country, while Sam grows up to be a zookeeper.
