Hello. My name is Emma, and in todays video I am going to teach you some great writing tips. These tips are for both academic writing and non-academic writing. Okay? So its for writing in general. Now, this video is going to be in two parts, because I have so many tips, so Im going to give five tips in this video and five tips in the next video. Okay, so lets get started.
So, there are so many different ways... Or so many different types of writing we do in our lives; we write emails, we write essays if were a student, we might write a Facebook post, or we might write a resume or a cover letter. So its very important to develop your writing skills because you will be writing throughout your life a lot. So lets look at my first tip.
My first tip is: Its very important to think about the genre of what youre writing. Genre is a very fancy word that pretty much means type. So, a genre of writing might be an essay, or it might be a cover letter, or an email, or a tweet. These are all different genres, and each one of these has a different expectation on what you should include and how you should write it. So its very important, first step is: Know the genre or know the type, and know what is expected of you.
Also important in this is knowing your audience, or thinking about your audience. So, for example, if you write an email, the language youre going to use and the way youre going to write will be different if you write an email to your friend versus an email to your boss. So its important to think about: Who are you writing to? because this is going to help you decide what to write and how to write it. Same with, you know, if you are on Twitter and you write a tweet, or on Facebook a Facebook post, you know, its important to think about your audience. You know, are you writing this post for friends to see, or is this a post your boss might see, or members of the public? You know, and that could be a problem. So its important to think about, especially with this and on other social media, too: Audience. Who will see this and what will they think about it, and what are their expectations? You know, some people work for companies where theyre responsible for social media, so its important, too, the type of wording they use when theyre writing on Facebook. If you work at a company and youre writing for your company, its going to be different than if youre writing for your friends. Same with an essay. An essay has a certain structure, you know, its supposed to be a certain amount of pages, it has a certain organization to it, and so knowing whats expected of you when you write an essay will help you because its going to be very different than, for example, a Facebook post. Same with in business, business reports. Understanding the format of a business report is important if this is something youre going to be writing, and thinking about your audience. Same with executive summaries, which is a type of thing businesspeople write. If youre not in business you might not ever write one of these, but if you are in business you need to realize that audience is important because professionals are going to be reading this, and these people are busy, so, you know, knowing your audience and knowing what is expected of you is the very first step to good writing. Lets look at some other tips.
Okay, so weve talked about genre or the type of writing youre doing, and part of this is knowing the expectations for how long what you write should be. Okay? So you want to know a bit about length expectations before you start writing. This is really important, especially in university where you often have a number of pages youre allowed to write. Its important, you know, in the workplace because sometimes, you know, you cant write a lot. […] My TOP 5 Writing Tips (for all levels)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xu2gm-Y4RXs/mqdefault.jpg)

Hello, my name is Emma, and in todays video, we are going to learn some English that is
very important for our social lives.
So were going to learn words like meet, see, and get together, and were going
to learn the differences between these words and how to use them.
Theyre very important words, and we use them a lot in English.
So my first question to you is, which sentence is better?
Every weekend I meet my family, or every weekend I get together with my family?
Both of these sentences are possible, but one is a little bit better than the other.
Okay, so which sentence is better?
Well, theyre both possible, but I would say the second sentence, Every weekend I get
together with my family is the better sentence.
And the reason is because we use get together informally when were talking about social
events, and we usually use meet in formal situations.
So for example, at work I meet with my boss.
This is a formal situation.
I use the word meet.
At work, I meet with clients.
I meet with customers.
These are all formal situations, whereas when Im seeing my friends or my family, its not
formal.
Were having fun.
I can relax.
I can be myself.
So in these cases, when were socializing, we can use get together with.
So the major difference is this meet is usually used for work situations, and get
together is used more for social situations.
Now lets learn a little bit more about these two verbs and how we use them.
Okay, so lets look at some more examples with get together.
Again, we use get together to mean spend time with someone.
Its often when theres a group of people together for an event, like a party or to
hang out.
So how might we use this?
Well, someone might ask you, What did you do last weekend?
You might say, Oh, I got together with my family.
This means you spent time with your family.
Again, we use this a lot in English, so its a really good expression to use.
Notice here I wrote got.
Got is the past tense of get.
And I want to also just show you this word with.
When we use get together, we need to talk about who we got together with.
So youll see this preposition, Who did you get together with?
I got together with my friends.
I got together with other YouTubers.
I got together with my family.
I got together with my co-workers.
So we use the word with after get together.
All right, lets look at another example with get together.
So every Tuesday, I get together with my friends.
So this is - were talking about every Tuesday, were talking about the present tense, so
we can say get instead of got.
Got is for the past, get is for the present, and will get is for the future.
Okay, so what about as a noun?
Well, we can use get together as a noun.
What you will notice is we have the word get, and then we have here this hyphen, and then
we have the word together.
So it has that little hyphen to connect the word when we use it as a noun.
And how do we use it as a noun?
Well, heres an example.
I went to two get-togethers.
This means - this means I went to two events where people were at, they might be parties.
The reason I said two here is because I want to show you get together is a countable
noun.
We can count the number of get-togethers.
So that means that if youre talking about one get-together, you need the article a
or the in front of it.
There is a get-together this weekend.
Do you want to come to the get-together?
And again, it just means an event, usually with friends or family.
So lets look at another example.
At the get-together, I saw Adam, James, Ronnie, Rebecca, and Alex.
It was an engVid get-together.
So get-together is another great word to use when youre talking about your social life.

Hello.
My name is Emma, and today I am going to teach you three easy expressions we use in everyday
English.
Im going to teach you lets, I will teach you how about, and I will also teach you
why dont we.
So these are important expressions.
Ill teach you the grammar as well as how we use them.
So lets get started.
The first one were going to look at is lets.
We use lets when we are making a suggestion.
We are presenting a plan or idea to another person.
So my first example is Lets go to the park.
What does this mean?
Well, lets means let us, so it means we.
Let us go to the park.
Lets go to the park.
And it just means my suggestion is we go to the park together.
Now its really important that you notice this little apostrophe here, because without
this apostrophe, lets has a different meaning.
Ill explain that in a moment.
My second example is Lets have lunch at 1pm.
What does this mean?
Well, it means my suggestion or my idea is we should have lunch at 1pm together.
So lets talk about the grammar of lets.
So when we use lets, again, it means let us, its followed by the base form of a verb.
So what does that mean?
Well, the verb does not have ed, it does not have ing, it does not have a conjugation;
its just the base form.
So lets look at some examples.
I could say Lets watch a movie.
Watch is the base form of the verb to watch.
I could say Lets see a show.
See is the base form of the verb to see.
Lets do art.
Do is the base form of the verb to do.
Or Lets eat a piece of cake.
And so, again, these are all suggestions on what you want to do with another person together.
So can you make a negative sentence with lets?
You sure can.
If you add not, you can make a negative sentence or a negative suggestion.
So for example, Lets not, and then you have the base of the verb.
Imagine somebody says to you, Hey, lets eat 30 hot dogs tonight.
I dont think thats a good idea, so you might say, Hmm, lets not eat 30 hot dogs together.
Or maybe somebody says, Hey, lets go camping tonight.
If you dont like camping, you might say, Lets not go camping tonight.
Lets do something else instead.
Maybe somebody wants to pull an all-nighter, stay up all night studying English at the
library.
You might say, Hmm, lets not study English all night at the library.
So these are some examples of how to use not.
So, again, it follows lets, and lets stands for let us, so Lets not do this.
So very important, many people make mistakes with lets.
Specifically, they confuse these two words, lets and lets.
You might think, Oh, well, arent these the same?
They have the same pronunciation.
Thats true, but the difference is this apostrophe.
Lets with no apostrophe means allow, so I can say, Oh, my mother lets me cook
turkey at Thanksgiving.
Or, The kids parents let him use his iPad all the time.
So it can mean allow.
This is different than lets with an apostrophe, which means let us, which is what weve
just talked about.
It means to give a suggestion.
All right, so lets now talk about how about.
How about is another way to make a suggestion for a plan or idea.
I can say, How about we learn English together?
So this means Im suggesting we learn English together.
Its my idea or my suggestion for a plan.
Heres another example.
How about we watch a movie tonight?
One thing I can also say about this is that sometimes in conversation, people will say
how bout.
So even though when we write it, its how about, you might actually hear a native
speaker say, How bout?
How bout we learn English tonight?
