On the banks of the Yangtze River lies Nantong, a city where fertile soil and a mild climate created the perfect setting for cotton-growing. It is here that one of China’s oldest and most celebrated textile traditions was born: blue calico.
Practiced since the Western Han dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago, this craft was originally handed down from mother to daughter. The secret of its deep, almost black-tinged blue lies in a meticulous process: soaking and dyeing the cotton with indigo three to four times a day, often over several weeks, until the fabric reaches its iconic shade.
