One or two news stories over the years have reported the couple of occasions that the Royal Navy has sent submarines to Manchester along the Manchester Ship Canal.
In fact, it hasn’t been just a couple of occasions, submarines have sailed to Manchester on at least 48 occasions, many which have been lost to time.
Not just Royal Navy subs too, not one but two German U-Boats, a submarine from Canada and one from France have all graced our not underused inland waterway, stopping in the city’s docks.
For the first time ever, I’ll document each instance. I should point out that the twin cities of Salford and Manchester border each other and while it may appear I use the two interchangeably, The Port of Manchester was a port in Salford.
