In this episode of my Flotsam and Jetsam retrospective, we take a deep dive into When the Storm Comes Down (1990), the band's ambitious third album and one of the most divisive releases in their catalog.
After signing with MCA Records, Flotsam and Jetsam looked poised for a mainstream breakthrough. Instead, a controversial production style overshadowed some of the band's most progressive songwriting. We'll explore the label change, the recording process, the criticism surrounding the album's thin production, and why many fans consider it one of thrash metal's biggest missed opportunities.
We'll also examine how the album's slower, syncopated riffs and mid-tempo grooves anticipated the rise of groove metal, making it an overlooked bridge between classic thrash and the sound that would dominate the 1990s.
