Long before the Meta Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro, an MIT scientist built a virtual reality headset so heavy it had to be suspended from the ceiling by a massive mechanical arm. This is the story of Ivan Sutherland and the "Sword of Damocles"—the terrifying, state-of-the-art 1968 invention that started it all.
Decades before the internet, Sutherland envisioned the "Ultimate Display": a room controlled entirely by computer graphics where virtual objects could interact with physical matter. In this retro tech documentary, we look at his groundbreaking 1962 Sketchpad software (the ancestor of modern CAD), the bizarre ultrasonic tracking systems used to achieve 6 degrees of freedom in the 60s, and how the PDP-1 computer brought the very first mixed-reality wireframes to life.
