Avatar before there was Avatar :) Long before the digital age, before KOTOR, before Youtube, when film schools required your projects to be shot on film - I was at SDSU, and together with a talented group of friends, we set out to do a Vietnam War film. When advisors told us we had just come off a Civil War movie and we should show range, we were able to take the story, which originally was a standed GI who is taken in by a Vietcong woman who is hopeful for the war's end yet kind to the soldier - and transfer it completely into a sci fi setting! Thus, I present to you - THE SYNDICATE.
This was the first version, with a few deleted scenes from the final - while we were waiting for our composer to do an original score - so you'll notice a lot of Starship Troopers music, and Star Wars music. Trivia - our movie premiered in our school's film festival two days before Attack of the Clones did - and we had the score throughout the movie as temp. I had somehow tracked it down before release and used it before it was ever heard in cinemas across the globe for Star Wars! :)
We were in film school so looking back now all these years later - I notice there are some audio issues and editing things I'd do differently, but I do have a lot of love for this film, and you can see my Star Wars fandom sprinkled throughout. Shades of what was to come for KOTOR. I mean, the main character's name is Kaydon!
FYI, half this cast are still my friends and were voices in my KOTOR movies! Listen for Eric who was Kondor Moderro, look for Greg who was Seth Draze, Joey is a mage who was Kasal in Ep3 - myself as Kaydon Sentry (I was Logan Starr in the KOTOR flicks) and a few other surprises! And it's dedicated to Bert Moeller - who portrays General Moderro in this movie (he played Slug in KOTOR Ep2) - rest in peace old friend!
