Games Workshop published Warmaster in 2000, a mass battle rule system written by legendary designer Rick Priestley. Set in the Warhammer fantasy universe, Warmaster allowed players to field vast 10mm armies for epic battles and castle sieges. With a proven author, a popular setting, and an innovative game system, Warmaster had all the proper ingredients to be GW's next big game.
Today on Little Wars TV we explore the perplexing demise of Warmaster, which Games Workshop formally killed in 2013 after years of languishing support and low visibility. Why did Warmaster fail to take off in 2000? Why did it fail to relaunch in 2005 with a plastic Middle Earth boxed set, "The Battle of the Five Armies?" We interview Rick Priestley and many others in the Warmaster community to find the answers.
While Games Workshop may have abandoned the game system, a devoted fanbase around the world kept Warmaster alive. Today, the rules are alive and well, making something of a comeback thanks to a free fan edition and the explosion of affordable 3D printed armies.
