Just 60 miles from Shanghai lies Suzhou — a city once dubbed the Venice of the East by Marco Polo, not for its canals alone, but for its serene beauty. Suzhou is home to what many consider the most exquisite classical gardens in all of China.
These masterpieces, dating back to the 11th century, are living poetry. Influenced by the flowing brushwork of traditional Chinese landscape paintings, Suzhou’s gardens are designed with deep philosophical intent. Every rock, tree, and pond is carefully placed to evoke the illusion of infinite nature within a confined space — a sophisticated dance between form, symbolism, and serenity.
It’s also here that the refined art of bonsai — “tree in a pot” — took root. Once the passion of scholars and emperors, these miniature landscapes were both meditative practice and treasured gift. Suzhou’s bonsai masters developed a striking style known as “the tree branch overhanging a cliff” — an expression of elegance, resilience, and the power of nature in miniature.
