Times are dark and the struggle is real in Thailand as the country battles hits that keep on coming from the coronavirus and bodies have literally been left lying in the streets.
Total COVID-19 cases since April 2020 have climbed up to 714,684 and the new daily case count is 21,379, as of August 6.
It seems like a world away when beautiful Thai beaches were filled with holiday-makers and the vibrant city of Bangkok was bustling with life.
When the third wave of the pandemic hit in April, Thailand could no longer escape the worst, with record high infections and deaths.
And of course, people are looking to the government in how it’s all being handled. They’re not liking what they’re seeing and public confidence is plummeting.
Right now, just three vaccine brands are available in Thailand: AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sinovac with the government even suggesting that Thais mix for a vax cocktail.
But there’s also more: there’s a major bed shortage around the country. People have been seen camping out outside of hospitals, waiting for treatment. Medical facilities have been overwhelmed and the nation’s poorest have been left behind. #Waitingforbeds has been a trending hashtag.
What people are demanding more than anything right now — short of Prayuth losing his job — is the rollout of more effective mRNA vaccines and readily available healthcare.
