The year is 2021 and yet, somehow, dolphins are still being exploited in Bali.

You would think exploitative practices like dolphin shows and “swimming with the dolphins” attractions would be a thing of the past after documentaries like “Blackfish" blew the lid off conditions at marine life amusement parks but nope, that’s not the case in Indonesia.

Bali is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and attractions featuring dolphins is still a big draw for not woke tourists and there are still hotels operating with dolphin pools.

There’s been some improvements in recent years, wherein officials and animal activists have worked together to rescue the dolphins kept in captivity. However, it’s not enough — rescuing the dolphins is just one step. 

And what happens to the dolphins after they’re rescued? Do they have a better life?

To answer this question, we spoke with Femke den Haas, co-founder of The Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), which has been one of the government’s partners in rescuing dolphins.
