Five Nights at Freddy's is a survival horror series created by Scott Cawthon in which you face off against corrupted, deadly animatronics from 12AM to 6AM. But behind this simple premise is a boatload of lore, covered by the likes of Matpat's Game Theory, Dawko, Razzbowski, and so on.
In FNaF 1, you face off against Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy in a small pizzeria called "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza." Defend against them using your lights, doors, cameras, and tips from Phone Guy, but watch that power!
In FNaF 2, you face off against Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Mangle, Withered Freddy, Withered Bonnie, Withered Chica, Withered Foxy, Balloon Boy, Golden Freddy, and The Puppet, a lanky marionette possessed by the spirit of Charlotte "Charlie" Emily, the daughter of Henry Emily, owner of Fazbear Entertainment. It takes place in a bigger, "New and Improved Freddy Fazbear's Pizza." In this one you don't have to worry about power, but you also have no doors to close. You just have the cameras, a flashlight, and a Freddy Fazbear mask / head. This location is likely where the infamous "Bite of '87" takes place.
In FNaF 3, you face off against Springtrap, an old, molded, green bunny suit containing the body of William Afton- the man behind the slaughter and the Missing Children's Incident. Additionally, you deal with hallucinations from Phantom Freddy, Phantom Chica, Phantom Foxy, Phantom Mangle, Phantom Balloon Boy, and The Phantom Puppet. All of this takes place at "Fazbear's Fight," a horror attraction based on the old rumors surrounding Freddy's. In this game the tools at your disposal are the cameras, audio lure, and your wits.
In FNaF 4 you face off against twisted, nightmareish versions of the gang you've come to know and fear: Nightmare Freddy (and the Freddles), Nightmare Bonnie, Nightmare Chica (and the Nightmare Cupcake), Nightmare Foxy, Plushtrap, Nightmare Fredbear, and Nightmare. This one takes place in a house- specifically a child's bedroom. Defend against your nightmares with a flashlight, your doors, and by listening for animatronic breathing.
In FNaF 4 you witness the Bite of '83, an event in which Michael Afton puts his brother's, Evan Afton's, head into Fredbear's mouth. Tears loosening the springlocks, Fredbear's jaw clamped down, crushing Evan. This got Fredbear's Family Diner closed down.
FNaF 4 had a non-canon Halloween Update in which we got the additions of Jack-O-Chica, Jack-O-Bonnie, The Pumpkin, Nightmare Mangle, Nightmare Balloon Boy, and Nightmarionne.
In FNaF: Sister Location you face off against Circus Baby, Ballora, Funtime Freddy, Funtime Foxy, and Ennard in an underground facility.
In FNaF 6, or Pizzeria Simulator, you face Scraptrap, Scrap Baby, Molten Freddy, and Lefty. This game marks the end of FNaF as it was known before, wrapping up many threads.
FNaF: AR has emails.
FNaF: VR Help Wanted introduces Glitchtrap (or Malhare), a William Afton-like creature given life through agony. This creature infected the mind of Vanessa (also known as Vanny and Ness). She then went off to Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex, which leads into the game FNaF: Security Breach.
