What's the most dangerous thing in the Costa Rican jungle? Most people say spiders. Some say big cats. Some say the fer-de-lance. They're all wrong.
I was checking one of my best trail camera locations — a spot that had already given me jaguarundi footage earlier this year — when I noticed the lens was completely blocked by a stick. Annoying. I reached down to pull it free.
My brain caught up with my hand just in time.
Inches from my fingers, perfectly camouflaged against the Browning trail camera housing, was a tiny pit viper. Porthidium porrasi. The white-tailed hognosed viper. A baby — and completely invisible until it wasn't.
I had reached into the strike zone of an animal I couldn't even see.
