Most people know the Statue of Liberty. Few know it arrived in New York in hundreds of separate pieces.
On June 17, 1885, the French ship *Isère* delivered the disassembled Statue of Liberty to New York Harbor. Packed into more than 200 crates, the massive monument would later be assembled on Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island) and become one of the most recognizable symbols of freedom in the world.
For millions of immigrants arriving by sea, the statue would become a powerful first glimpse of America and a lasting symbol of hope and opportunity.
