On June 18, 1812, the United States officially declared war on Great Britain, beginning what became known as the War of 1812.
Rising tensions over trade restrictions, the impressment of American sailors, and frontier conflicts pushed the young nation into war with one of the world's most powerful empires. Over the next two years, the conflict would produce famous naval battles, the burning of Washington, D.C., and moments that helped shape America's national identity.
Though often overshadowed by the American Revolution and Civil War, the War of 1812 played a major role in defining the future of the United States.
