Every Gunpla builder uses a sponge for chipping. On this Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex | Bandai's Iron-Blooded Orphans (IBO) Gunpla, painted entirely by hand. The sponge turned out to do a second job nobody talks about: it dry brushes better than an actual brush does.
In this video: additive chipping with AK Interactive 3rd Gen Deep Yellow (AK11045) over an oxide red base, why how wet the sponge is controls whether you get large chips or fine ones, working the sponge directionally so the wear reads as damage rather than decoration, and the moment a nearly-dry sponge became the best dry brushing tool on the bench — sponging as a colour technique, not just weathering. Two colour examples — a contrasting yellow, and a tonal Vallejo Model Color Cavalry Brown (70.982 / 162) — so you can see the effect when it's obvious and when it isn't.
This is a colour coat, not weathering. Start loose, finish tight.
