“You and Dad should do a video”.

Saturday is taking a surprising shape. Something creative is afoot. I know this feeling. I love it.

I had shown Lucas (11) the Cursed Sauna Spoon and Never Open The Fridge the previous day. His brain had clearly been firing overnight. He had hopes, and they were turning into plans.

“Yeah, we should!”

In the familiar initial chaos of unending creative possibilities, only slightly constrained by our £0 budget (which stretched to £4.50 after a face-paint run to The Range), I suggested Lucas think about an ordinary object he uses every day and imagine it coming to life and turning bad.

Cheese.

Of course!

We were off. Our storyboarding was punctuated by processing laps of the garden. After each intermission, Lucas would return, a smile on his face, chuckling to himself. “What if...”

Each lap of the garden seemed to bring more clarity to the drawing board. Sometimes the idea was obvious to him; at other times, sound was the catalyst for his vision. He'd disappear to play horror chords and effects on the synth, and the scene would emerge in his imagination.

This is all gold...but how can we make the sandwich fly? How can we show the spirit rising from the broken cheese?

Jono stepped into his element. Bamboo. A candle. Cotton thread. A cardboard hammock.

As we shot the scenes, new ideas emerged. Unexpected paths and happy accidents.

Once we had the core clips, I uploaded them and assembled a rough sequence. This allowed us to collect and create sounds for the overdubbed audio. I then stepped into my element with the edit.

It came together. And it didn't disappoint. Lucas was literally collapsing with laughter watching the finished video for the first time. And so was I.

I love days like that. I love spontaneous creative projects. I love crying in a fit of giggles, sitting on the floor, tossing breadcrumbs in the air, pretending they are flakes of my disappearing body at the hands of a cheese demon with parmesan graters for hands.

It's days like that and people like this that provide moments of deep peace and appreciation for life. Here. Now. Where I am. What I've got. Who I'm with.
