A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that 58% of patients with narrowed carotid arteries had microplastics embedded directly inside their arterial plaques. While it is not universal, since 42% of the group did not show accumulation, the presence of these synthetic particles is highly concerning. Those with plastic-studded blood vessels exhibited much higher levels of dangerous inflammatory biomarkers like TNF-alpha and C-reactive protein, exposing a direct correlative link between systemic plastic pollution and vascular inflammation
