On 2 March 1965, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, spoke to ITN’s Reggie Bosanquet in an exclusive interview filmed at the Iranian Embassy in London during the Shah’s state visit to Britain. In the course of a wide‑ranging exchange, the Shah reflected on the role of kings in Iranian history, attributing the country's past glories to "strong" leaders, and episodes of conflict and defeat to "not very competent" ones. In doing so, he set out a view of Iranian history that placed decisive power in the hands of individual monarchs – and implicitly cast himself as the central agent shaping the country’s fortunes.
