Dutch Sheets states that Jesus equated the “secret place” in Psalm 91:1 (KJV) with the prayer closet found in Matthew 6:6 as he erroneously claims that we must dwell in prayer to secure God’s protection. Bob DeWaay and Jessica Kramasz show that this is false. They examine Psalm 91:1 using multiple translations to show that “secret place” in the KJV is consistently translated as “shelter” or “protection” in other translations. Those who are redeemed dwell in the shelter and protection of God because of their relationship with God. The two go on to discuss Matthew 6:6 in context to show that Jesus was warning against hypocrisy and seeking status in the eyes of others. Neither verse supports Sheets’ claim that we must build boundaries of protection through prayer.
