South America can seem like a different world to Europe. Being so big and boasting such a variety of terrain, South America is full of perfect hiding places for people on the run. In the 1950s and 1960s, many German officials fled to this part of the world to start a new life. So many arrived, German speaking communities and ethnic enclaves began to pop up, many of which still exist today. The most notorious is Colonia dignidad, which I go into detail explaining in this video. But there are many more also.
