The Disney film Fantasia (1940) contains one of the darkest and scariest sequences of the studio's history, and also one of it's most visionary. I'm referring to the final segment of the film, based on Mussorgsky's composition "Night on Bald Mountain". In this video, I examine the dark folklore and mythology that inspired the segment, including the Witches' Sabbath and the origins of the Slavic god of evil, Chernabog (the mountain demon in the segment) to better understand what made this 78-year-old animated film so powerful.
