Known locally as The Inks, The Saltmarsh around Wigtown Bay in Galloway, south-west Scotland, is a unique natural environment, a strange and stunning landscape rich in biodiversity, especially birdlife.
In the second of five "chapters" that make up a longer film, ranger Elizabeth Tindal and author Stephen Rutt visit The Martyrs' Stake. This atmospheric location commemorates the execution, in 1685 of two religious dissenters, Margaret Lachlan and Margaret Wilson, in 1685. How do the land and its history meet?
This film - and its four companion pieces - was commissioned by the Wigtown Book Festival in 2020, as part of Scotland Year of Coasts and Waters, supported by NatureScot. Writer Stephen Rutt was also commissioned to write a book about the saltmarsh's natural and human history - also titled The Saltmarsh Library - which is due for publication in 2021.
