There's been much debate about the effectiveness of economic sanctions introduced against Russia following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

While some of the macroeconomic indicators may paint an upbeat economic picture for Russia, a more detailed look suggests that the Russian economy faces multiple and mounting challenges, and that the Russian government's ability to address them is dwindling.
