The impact of sulphur has become one of the biggest soybean stories in recent years. Now, researchers and seed companies are asking what comes next as they chase even higher yields and reach for the 100-bushel-per-acre threshold.

In this episode of RealAgriculture's Soybean School, Maizex Seeds agronomist Henry Prinzen shares how the company's soybean research program is building on what it has learned about ammonium sulphate (AMS) by evaluating controlled-release phosphorus, variety selection, seeding rates, and fungicide applications as part of an integrated high-management system.

For several years, Maizex has been evaluating the benefits of applying 100 pounds per acre of AMS at planting. Prinzen says the treatment has consistently shown value in situations where sulphur availability is limited, including early-planted soybeans, lighter-textured soils, and fields with high levels of crop residue.

"We know AMS works in certain situations... but what can we do to push the boundary even more?" Prinzen asks.

That next step includes evaluating struvite, a controlled-release phosphorus fertilizer that has attracted growing interest following recent research highlighting phosphorus' contribution to soybean yield. Rather than studying fertility products individually, Maizex is combining them into a high-management system that layers AMS, struvite, fungicide applications, optimized seeding rates, and variety selection.

The company is also exploring whether higher fertility can support lower soybean populations. Variety selection is another key part of the research. Prinzen says different soybean architectures may respond differently to fertility programs and fungicide applications. Bushier varieties, for example, may benefit more from fungicides than taller, more open-canopied types, while seed size and plant structure could also influence the response to intensive management.

To better understand those interactions, each variety is being evaluated with and without fungicide applications while also being tested across a wide range of seeding rates—from 60,000 to 220,000 seeds per acre.

The goal is to identify the best combination of fertility, population, fungicide, and genetics to help each soybean variety reach its yield potential.
