I watched every Nightmare on Elm Street movie. All nine of them.
When I was a kid, my first introduction to Freddy Krueger wasn’t even the movies—it was the Angry Video Game Nerd episode where James Rolfe tore apart those awful NES and Commodore 64 games. That was my starting point. From there, I went back and actually watched the films, and I loved them. Freddy quickly became my favorite slasher villain. Unlike Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, who were always silent and stoic, Freddy had personality. He cracked jokes, he toyed with his victims, and that mix of charisma and comedy made him stand out.
It’s been years since I revisited these movies, so I decided to marathon the entire franchise from start to finish. I wanted to see how they hold up, where the highs and lows are, and whether Freddy is still as fun to watch now as he was when I was a kid.
One quick note before we get started: I’m not covering Freddy vs. Jason here. That movie’s its own standalone crossover event. It doesn’t really feel like part of the main Elm Street saga, so I’m leaving it out. What we are looking at today are the nine films that make up the actual Nightmare on Elm Street series.
So let’s go through them one by one, starting with Wes Craven’s 1984 original.
