THE GODZILLA RETROSPECTIVE SERIES RETURNS!!! After nearly 20 years of dominance, the Godzilla franchise was running on fumes. The Showa era closed with dwindling ticket sales and a turn toward younger audiences. The series disappeared from Japanese theaters, but American television saw an opportunity. Saturday morning cartoons were booming, and Hanna-Barbera licensed the character to create an animated version aimed squarely at kids. The show reflected the media climate of its time. Concerns about violence led to strict FCC guidelines, which forced a softer approach. Godzilla could breathe fire and fight monsters, but he couldn’t level cities or harm civilians. Every action needed justification. What emerged was a tamed version of the character with him being less of a destructive force of nature, more a dependable ally.
