Criminal Record | The Rise and Fall of Mobster Joe Colombo @CriminalRecord_ | Uploaded April 2023 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
Joe Colombo is a boss known for being one of the founders of the Italian-American Civil Rights League, or IACRL. This “civil rights” organization mostly served as a front for the Italian-American Mafia. Colombo used his position in the organization to brag about his charity work and his opinions on the alleged abuse of the Italian American population in America by the Mob.
Colombo’s connection and partnership with Carlo Gambino elevated him to the ranks of the Commission’s elite. He was attempting to govern a family infamous for internal strife; the Colombos have had numerous civil battles throughout the years. His main family concern was a rogue soldier named “Crazy Joe” Gallo, who fiercely wanted to take over the family.
On June 28, 1971, Colombo was about to appear in front of tens of thousands of Italians at his rally. One of Crazy Joe’s followers approached and shot Colombo, who survived. Joe Gallo was assassinated the following year, and Colombo died in 1978. His name is still associated with the family he formerly led.
