Carlo Gambino had an excellent life for a mob boss. While feared, it was his colleagues’ esteem that propelled him to become the boss of bosses. He could murder people with a simply nod or wink. From 1957 through 1976, he was America’s most powerful mobster, and the New York mafia enjoyed one of its most successful periods as a result.
Carlo was the architect behind the assassination of Albert Anastasia in 1957, with the assistance of Vito Genovese. Carlo was far more popular with the other employers than Anastasia because he was more diplomatic. He was even polite to the FBI investigators who were frequently watching him and knocking on his door. As per rumor, he would even invite agents to coffee before they booked him and yet manage to get away before they could.
He was a deadly wolf disguised as a sheep. The famed don was in poor health by the mid-1970s. Gambino lived freely until his death from heart illness in Long Island in 1976.
