R/V Atlantis returned to Woods Hole this week after three weeks surveying historic shipwrecks Terra Nova & Quest in the Labrador Sea!
During the Heroic Age Expedition, led by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and WHOI, Atlantis played a key role in the survey mission as the support vessel for HOV Alvin, ROV Falcon, and a floating lab for the scientists, imaging experts, and technicians.
Owned by the Office of Naval Research and funded by the National Science Foundation, Atlantis is a key part of the UNOLS-designated U.S. Academic Research Fleet, which enables scientists to explore some of the most difficult-to-reach places on Earth. Operated by an expert crew of WHOI mariners, Atlantis, Alvin, and their teams provide researchers with the ability to advance understanding of the ocean—from deep-sea ecosystems to the history hidden beneath the waves.
