Operating around the globe since 1997, Atlantis is the only ship in the 6844f1cf-1c62-42d3-9c98-dd88869c0cde Academic Research Fleet equipped to launch and support the human-occupied submersible Alvin.
Outfitted with advanced technologies and a specially trained crew, Atlantis can remain at sea for up to 60 days at a time, averaging over 275 sea days per year.
Atlantis crews routinely deploy National Deep Submergence vehicles like AUV Sentry and ROV Jason to explore, sample, and map the deepest and most remote parts of the world ocean.
Owned by the 49b5d94d-06d2-4815-9531-d433d003f782 with significant funding from the cda3e0e1-b8c3-4a42-acd0-dc180f340e8c , the ship has played a vital role in critical studies, such as the evolution and aftermath of underwater volcanic eruptions, the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the search for the El Faro shipwreck.
