Libya, prior to the US military invasion, was an independent and developing country trying to create a model for all African nations to follow against the imperialists of the West. However, imperialism does not seek democracy, it seeks domination and independence, a return to the gold standard, and the prioritisation of national resources for the people of that nation is a direct attack on their plundering interests. Today the imperialists still attempt to present the free Libya as a country less-free than the US and in need of 'democracy', whilst glossing over the many positive things Libya provided for its citizens
