Most coffee upgrades start with a simple question: “Will this actually make my coffee taste better?”
And when the price gap looks like a $700 espresso setup versus an $8,500 setup, that question becomes even harder to answer.

The truth is, expensive coffee gear is rarely just about making a better cup. It’s about changing the relationship you have with the process. The difference between these two espresso setups isn’t simply cheap versus expensive, beginner versus expert, or good coffee versus bad coffee.
It’s something much more interesting.
It’s convenience versus control.
In this video, I’m comparing two completely different approaches to home espresso: the Breville Bambino Plus Espresso Machine paired with the Fellow Opus Coffee Grinder, against the Lelit Bianca V3 Espresso Machine paired with the Option-O Lagom 01 Coffee Grinder.
Same coffee beans. Same recipe. Same goal.
But completely different philosophies.
The interesting part is that both setups are capable of making genuinely great espresso. The difference isn’t whether they can make coffee. The difference is what happens when you want to go further.
The Bambino represents a modern approach to espresso: fast, approachable, and designed to remove friction. It heats quickly, simplifies the workflow, and gets you from coffee craving to espresso shot with minimal effort.
And that’s not a weakness.
For many home baristas, that is exactly what makes a machine valuable.
But the higher-end espresso machines and grinders tell a different story. A machine like the Lelit Bianca isn’t built around speed and simplicity. It’s built around stability, repeatability, and giving the user more control over extraction.
That extra cost doesn’t magically create flavour.
It creates options.
The same goes for the grinder comparison between the Fellow Opus and the Option-O Lagom 01. One is designed to make excellent espresso accessible. The other is designed around precision, consistency, and extracting the full potential from the coffee.
This is where coffee gear gets fascinating.
Because the upgrade path isn’t always about chasing a better tasting coffee. Sometimes it’s about chasing a deeper understanding of the coffee itself.
A better grinder won’t replace good technique. A more expensive espresso machine won’t fix poor preparation. But the right equipment can open doors that weren’t available before.
And that’s where the home barista journey becomes less about buying equipment and more about discovering what kind of coffee experience you actually enjoy.
Do you want a setup that disappears into your morning routine?
Or do you want a machine that invites you to experiment, adjust, and explore?
Neither answer is wrong.
The best espresso machine isn’t always the most expensive one. The best coffee grinder isn’t always the one with the biggest burrs or the most impressive specifications.
It’s the one that matches the way you want to make coffee.
Because at the end of the day, coffee is still a daily ritual. It’s a few quiet minutes before the day begins, a creative process, and a small opportunity to understand something a little better.
The gear matters.
But knowing why it matters matters more.
Thanks for spending some time exploring this comparison with me.
