In this video, I take a closer look at The Ramayana by R.K. Narayan — a shortened modern prose version of the great Indian epic, based on the Tamil telling by the poet Kamban.
This Penguin Classics edition includes an introduction by Pankaj Mishra, decorative illustrations drawn from Indian temple sculpture by R.K. Laxman, and is printed in the U.S. on cream-colored, non-pH neutral paper with a glued perfect binding.
Narayan’s clear and elegant prose makes this abridged edition an ideal entry point if you're new to the Ramayana.
It’s a powerful, respectful retelling that inspired me to seek out the full version someday.
