Baki the Grappler finally has a complete English Perfect Edition, but is it worth collecting all 24 volumes?
In this spoiler-free overview, I examine Kodama Tales' first volume of Keisuke Itagaki’s legendary martial-arts manga. The edition is printed in Japan and features a dust jacket, obi, glued perfect binding and restored full-colour pages from the manga’s original serialization.
Volume 1 contains 342 pages. The paper and printing are decent rather than genuinely premium, but the distinctive design, careful production and strong quality control make this a fascinating physical edition.
This was also my first experience reading Baki the Grappler. I enjoyed the introduction, although I’m not yet convinced that I want to collect the entire 24-volume Perfect Edition. I may need another volume or two before making that decision.
The original Baki the Grappler was serialized from 1991 to 1999 and collected in 42 standard tankōbon volumes. Kodama Tales’ English release is instead based on the 24-volume Japanese kanzenban edition. The wider Baki franchise has now surpassed 100 million copies in circulation worldwide.
