By mid-June 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant had grown weary of assaulting Richmond from the north. His new plan: cross the James River and seize Petersburg, the railroad hub that supplied the Confederate capital. It looked simple, until a stubborn Confederate force, soon reinforced by Robert E. Lee's entire army, ground the attack to a halt and forced a siege.
