The May 27th assault on Port Hudson was a costly failure. Colonel Bartlett was wounded and his regiment was decimated, with 102 men left dead, dying, or wounded across the field. Major Charles Plunkett took command for the June 14th attack, and the Confederates under General Gardner held out until surrendering on July 9th.
