Title: The Quantum World and the Early Universe
Guest Speaker: Ayngaran Thavanesan, Ph.D. candidate, Cambridge University
Summary: Learn about the science of Cosmology and how the universe began as a hot Big Bang and evolved over time. Ayngaran explains that we tend to think of a vacuum as space-time devoid of matter and energy, but in reality, in a vacuum, there are energy fluctuations that constantly pop in and out of existence. Thus, the universe emerged as a quantum fluctuation out of “nothing.” Ayngaran states that the early universe can be thought of as a massive ‘cosmological collider.’ He is currently investigating how gravitational waves from the cosmological inflation caused the polarization of the cosmic microwave background.
